For his participation in documenta fifteen (2022), Bell created a series of so-called History Paintings (also referred to as Protest Paintings), that commemorate significant events in recent Aboriginal history through monumental, pop art inspired paintings. It includes paintings such as Aboriginal Tent Embassy, which depicts the establishment of the Aboriginal Tent Ambassy in front of Parliament House in Canberra on January 26, 1972, which today is the longest running continuous Indigenous land protest in the world. This new painting, called Strike, was painted as response to the world-wide School Strikes for Climate Justice on March 25, 2022, initiated by Greta Thunberg. It suggests Bell’s ongoing identification with and support for other forms and causes of self-determination, including his admiration for the Black Panther party, other indigenous struggles, and demonstrations for climate justice and social justice.
